We’ve all had that sensation when we just knew how things were going to turn out before they did. You know, when you can’t put your finger on how you know, you just know you know. Now, if you’re like many others (myself included), you’ve overridden your ‘knowing’, and done the logical, rational thing, even when every part of you was screaming not to!
For some of you, it will have been a small speed bump on life’s road, and for some of you it was life changing, but here’s an interesting thing, most of you probably learned a lesson about the event or circumstances, but how many of you learnt the deeper, more valuable lesson… that you can trust that sense?
Some of you will do it, some of the time, normally when that knowing can be backed up with some good old hard facts & rationale. But how many of you knowingly & deliberately do it, when it seems to fly in the face of common sense?
I’m not suggesting you give up a promising career as a medical professional to go and become a goat herder in Tibet, just because it feels right. But I am asking you to acknowledge that knowing when it comes to the surface, and allow yourself to at least be open to what it suggests is possible. When you open up to the idea of something, the longer you remain open to it the possible it becomes, and the less effort you seem to have to put in to make the right things happen.
We’ve all had that experience of being pulled in two directions about going to a party or event, and making a last minute decision to go, ‘because it just felt right’, and whilst you can’t really afford it, or you were supposed to have that report finished for the meeting tomorrow morning, you’ve gone anyway… and something really good happened as a result!
Or maybe you’ve had a ‘gut feeling’ about a purchase, guiding you away from it, but you rationalised it was good value, that you really need it, that it’s exactly what you’ve been looking for, so you buy it… and it all goes horribly wrong!
These are just examples of your inner wisdom guiding you, but having to compete with your ‘logic’ circuits.
When you get that feeling, ask yourself, is there a way you can follow it that you can also justify. Allow yourself to be guided by it, checking in with it from time to time, just to make sure you’re still on the path that’s right for you.
If you’re still on it, you’ll know… How? It’ll just feel right, of course!
